One of the toughest parts of moving a house is shifting the furniture. Furniture is heavy and sometimes delicate and has to be handled with extreme care. This is something that has to be prevented at all costs. Here are 6 tips to be safe when moving furniture.

Disassemble

If your furniture can be disassembled, have it done. This would make lifting, carrying and loading it much easier. Moreover, the parts would require less space on the moving vehicles. You can imagine a big cabinet having to be carried and loaded on to the moving truck. There would be very little space for anything else. In most cases, the place you bought your furniture from will send a worker who would do the disassembly and then reassemble it when it has reached your new home. However, all furniture cannot be disassembled.

Preparation

Prepare the furniture for moving day. Remove any coverings, cushions or anything which can be removed. Make sure that each and every piece of furniture is stripped to its original state. Reduce the load on the furniture so that it becomes more mobile and easy to move. Keep in mind that you would have to offload it when you reach your new home.

New Home!

An important consideration to make is whether your old furniture can be moved into your new home. The doors might not be big enough to accommodate your furniture. Visit your new home and take measurements so that you have a fair idea if the furniture can be moved or not. Some homeowners buy new furniture for their new home so the old furniture might not require to be transported.

Lifting Technique

Smaller tables and chairs are easy to carry and move around. It’s the heavy furniture which can cause a strain on your back. There are major back problems that can be suffered such as a slip disc. Using the proper lifting technique is important. Lift the furniture placing the pressure on your knees instead of your back. This will make it much easier to lift it.

Sliders

Moving furniture on carpet or hardwood can cause damage to them. The carpet can be torn up. Instead of pushing the furniture across the surface, get sliders and put them underneath the feet of the tables, chairs and other furniture. This would make it safer to move the furniture without having to lift it.

Route

Clear the route through which the furniture is going to be moved. Remove everything possible from the hallway, stairs or any rooms the furniture has to be carried through. Also, take the pictures, paintings and other fixtures off the wall. Choosing and Placing Lights

The way you place lights will depend on the purpose of the room that you're decorating. A single central light is insufficient for most rooms, so you will need functional lights to compliment the central pendulum light in each room.

In the living room, you will probably want corner lamps, and a small standing lamp or table lamp next to each seating area, to allow each person in the room to control the level of light in their area.

In a bedroom, you may want dimmer switches which can be used to vary between soft lighting and full illumination. You may also opt for reading lamps on each side of the bed.

The bathroom and the kitchen are two places where bright, functional lighting is important. Bright lights near the sink in the bathroom, as well as the main work-benches in the kitchen, will make it easier for people who are trying to get things done in those areas. The kitchen, in particular, is a good area for directed spotlights. You could place strips of spotlights around each counter area, have a fluorescent tube across the ceiling near the sink, and have other lights in the corner.

Using Natural Light

You can achieve a lot with artificial light, but natural light can be very useful too. Natural light has many benefits - it doesn't require electricity, it's easier on the eye than artificial light, and it can make you feel happier and healthier too.

If you're lucky enough to have big windows that catch the sun for a large portion of the day, then why not take advantage of it by dressing the window with some made to measure blinds? There are several advantages to made to measure blinds - they maximize the space available in the room, and they will cover the window perfectly - blocking out light when that's required, and letting it in when you want to illuminate the room. If you opt for, say, wooden Venetian blinds, then you'll be able to open and close the blinds as required, angling the wooden Venetian blinds to prevent glare whilst still keeping the room bright and airy.

If you are a migraine sufferer, you may struggle to cope with certain kinds of artificial light. Sadly, incandescent bulbs (which do not tend to trigger migraines), are no longer on sale in Europe, but other migraine-friendly bulbs (such as LED ones) are available. Experiment with a few different bulb types to see which ones you get on with, before you invest a lot of time and effort in changing the lights you use in your house.
